For nearly two decades, she has closely collaborated with physical and behavioral health to develop a comprehensive understanding of a patient's experience and effective approaches to address it. Today, Dr. Sherry works in private practice with women, couples, and families as they navigate change, mental health, parenthood, conflict, and relationships. Her own life experiences with motherhood, fertility, grief, and loss give Dr. Sherry deeply personal perspectives on her patients’ needs.

Extensive expertise gained from 20 years of hands-on clinical experience

Dr. Sherry began her work at universities at Pepperdine Community Counseling Center and then at Golden State Hospital in the San Fernando Valley. There, she worked as part of a team of physicians and psychiatrists to diagnose and treat psychotic disorders and severe mental illness. This was her introduction to the relationship between biology and behavior and how it influences mental health.

Early in her career, she worked on the mental health investigation team in the public defenders’ office of the Santa Barbara Courthouse. There, she developed a passion for law and the legal system as she helped assess people with severe mood disorders who needed the care of a conservatorship.

After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family and a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Sherry began working with Healthcare Partners (now Optum) as a behavioral health clinician. She joined a pioneering program that worked in nursing homes and hospitals with people over 65 who had high-risk, chronic conditions that had led to undiagnosed depression. The program’s groundbreaking work drove the field of medicine to begin recognizing the connection between physical conditions and mental health.

Dr. Sherry expanded her work at Healthcare Partners to include helping new mothers experiencing postpartum depression, counseling people struggling with weight gain or weight loss, and teaching palliative care patients and caregivers how to manage stress and anxiety. This led to her work on a program that studied how African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and other cultures experienced and coped with high-risk medical issues and end-of-life conversations. Their success enabled them to implement partnerships in the program with leading Los Angeles hospitals, including UCLA, Providence Dignity Health, and Cedars.

Ultimately, while at Healthcare Partners, Dr. Sherry worked with Advanced Care Planners, a care team working with patients to define their advance directives, which designate medical decisions at different stages of life. This led to her work as Director of Palliative Care at Health Essentials, where she also worked with chronic and high-risk patients as they made difficult end-of-life decisions.

Dr. Sherry has lectured at UCLA, USC, Providence Dignity Health, Cedars, and select private organizations on a range of topics that include palliative care and behavioral health.

She lives with her family in Montecito, California, and strongly advocates for philanthropic initiatives that promote the health and wellbeing of children and families.
